• Locate important documents such as passports / driving licence / birth certs etc. and keep them seperate from what the moving crew are packing - especially if you are moving internationally.
  • Make sure to keep at least one copy of each bill from your utility suppliers.  They are handy to have as they show your account numbers and usually have customer service or helpline numbers.  This will also help to remind you to notify your supplies of change of address.  Don't forget to take the relevent readings on moving day.
  • As early in the process as you can, go through your house and decide if there is anything that you no longer need or use which you can dispose of or sell.  There's no point in paying for a mover to move items which you don't want.  Remember to check your attic, garage, shed or basement.  At this point you can also decide what items are to be left in the house as part of the sale.  You can then point this out to the surveyor initially and then subsequently to the moving crew.
  • Advise children of what is going to happen in the move.  Get them involved by allowing them to pack and label some of their own effects.
  • Two to three weeks before your move, plan to use consumables like tinned food etc, along with detergents and other cleaning items.  You could also go through your medicine cabinet and carefully dispose of outdated drugs.
  • Defrost your fridge a few days before the move.
  • Plan where abouts you want all items to go in the new house - be ready to instruct the crew as to where furniture has to be placed and in what rooms, this will minimise the amount of internal moving that you have to do in the days after the move has been completed.
